Dave grew up on a farm in rural Pennsylvania and loved the out of doors. As a child, he would often lay in bed at night looking out the window of the old farm house at the top of a Norway Spruce and would imagine some sort of adventure in the wilderness. He also enjoyed drawing natural subjects and was intrigued with the animal and plant life he encounter in the fields and woods. For this reason, natural science illustration is one of his favorite subjects to paint along with landscapes.
After graduating from high school, Dave studied art & design for 4 years at both The Studio School of Art & Design and The School of Art & Design in Philadelphia.
Over the years Dave has won various awards including a Graphic Design award from Scott Paper Company and a Best of Show for an oil painting of the Stewiacke Valley in Nova Scotia. He has also been invited to exhibit in both national and international illustration exhibitions with the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators and the Focus on Nature exhibit at the New York State Museum. Dave also had an illustration accepted into the Marine Corps Museum in Quantico, Va.
After serving in the Marine Corps, Dave opened an art & design studio and began working on everything from custom sign and screen printing to illustration work. He is one of the few "Letterheads" still around who can use a lettering quill. His first commission was to do 28 pen & ink drawings of the covered bridges in Columbia County, Pa. for the 1976 Bicentennial. 8X10 prints are still available. With over 40 years of motorcycling, he also enjoys striping a bike or painting a mural on a gas tank. And of course there is the illustration and design work which has included science and medical illustration, children's book illustration, historical illustration and portrait work to designs for everything from business cards to T-shirts. Dave works in the traditional mediums of acrylic, oil, pen & ink, pastel and airbrush as well as computer illustration using Photoshop and Illustrator.
Interested in a pet portrait or any commission work, give Dave a call for a free estimate. A typical 16X20 portrait of your pets head done in pastel is around $75. Dave's paintings are also available for sale as well as prints. Also custom illustrated sign work. Call 864-270-6116 or email him at dschuppert@hotmail.com to discuss your next project.
